Margarita Kjerbol
Celebrating a Life of Compassion
At 103 years old, Margarita Kjerbol has lived through a century of history — and through it all, one constant has remained: her profound love for animals.
Margarita spent her early years in Russia and Europe, witnessing the upheaval of World War II before building a new life in Venezuela. It was there she met and married Georg Kjerbol, a Danish civil engineer whose very first gift to her was a dog named Douchka.
As Georg’s distinguished engineering career carried them first to Uruguay and then to Seattle, Douchka was a beloved companion and always by Margarita’s side. After Douchka passed, Margarita never stopped finding joy in animals — befriending the pets of neighbors and loved ones.
“The genuine love and joy shown by happy pets cannot be compared. People often go through tough times and emotions, but pets so often show their love and basic sense to comfort and cheer us up again.”
That enduring belief inspired Margarita to include a generous gift to Seattle Humane in her will. Planned gifts from donors like Margarita make it possible for Seattle Humane to provide shelter, lifesaving medical care and adoption services for thousands of animals every year.
