If you’re 13-17 years old, you’re invited to help animals at Seattle Humane. Although our regular volunteer positions aren’t open to people under age 18, our programs give you the next best thing. From summer camp to weekly club meetings, to planning food drives, there is always a way to be involved.
Host a Pet Food Drive
You can organize a drive to gather donations of pet food, supplies, toys and cat litter. We distribute these to low-income senior pet owners and pet owners living with AIDS or cancer.
Host a Fundraiser
You can help raise money for pets by holding bake sales, yard sales, craft sales, participate in walk-a-thons, and much more! Feel free to use your imagination to come up with a fundraising idea. Our online fundraising website People Helping Pets can also help you fundraise at your event.
Humane Teen Club
HTC is a junior volunteer and teen development program created specifically for teens 13-17 years old. Are you interested in helping on campus, meeting other teens who love animals, exploring animal-related careers, and developing public speaking and leadership skills? Applications are accepted in the summer. Please check back in May 2019 for the 2019-20 school year. The program runs concurrently with the school year, Sept-May. We meet two Saturdays each month, and classes cover information about Seattle Humane, special training to prepare you to volunteer at the shelter, and a variety of animal welfare related topics. Space is limited so acceptance depends on the completeness and thoughtfulness of your application responses, a brief one-on-one meeting with an HTC facilitator during the informational session, and a letter of recommendation. Applicant requirements:
- Demonstrate interest in animal welfare, animal companionship and volunteerism
- Show a positive, respectful attitude toward peers, staff, volunteers and animals
- Be able to work well independently and in groups
- Be age 13 to 17 years old
- Commit to attend HTC classes, and complete homework and a service project
- Submit a complete program application
- Attend with a parent or legal guardian one HTC informational session
- Submit one letter of recommendation from a school, club, church or another authority figure that has known the teen for at least one year
There is an enrollment fee of $300. This fee covers program costs and a teen volunteer t-shirt. We are committed to making our programs accessible to all and offer scholarships for those needing assistance.
