The decision to surrender a pet is not an easy one. Seattle Humane offers compassion and understanding to owners in need of relinquishing their animal(s) into our care. We strive to help every person that comes to us. Through the course of this process, we may recommend contacting other area shelters or rescues that are better suited to help you and your pet, based on specific needs.
The Pet Resource Center at Seattle Humane uses a waitlist for small animals. Our waitlist can be long and it is not uncommon for it to take longer than 1 month before we can schedule an appointment. Rehoming your pet on your own may be a great option for you and your animal. There are lot of groups on social media that focus on a particular species, neighborhood specific pages are also a valuable tool for rehoming pets. An internet search may reveal area rescues that can offer exactly what you need.
Once the waitlist gets to you, we will contact you to schedule an appointment. We schedule owner surrender appointments 1-2 weeks in advance. If you need to return a pet adopted from Seattle Humane during the previous 2 weeks, we can typically offer an appointment within a few days of receiving this completed form. Seattle Humane currently accepts the following species of small mammals: rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rats, mice, hamsters and gerbils. We do not accept ferrets, birds, fish or reptiles. If you need immediate assistance, we recommend contacting your municipal animal shelter here.
The form below is meant to capture your experience with your pet. Please provide as much detail as possible. Please complete one form for each animal you are looking for assistance with. Once we have received your completed questionnaire we will be in touch to discuss the next steps.
