Opportunities to complete court-ordered community service are available through Seattle Humane’s Shelter Support volunteer program. Shelter Support volunteers support the daily care of shelter pets by cleaning laundry, dishes, crates, and other cleaning tasks.
Shelter Support shifts run seven days a week from 9 a.m. – 11a.m., 12p.m. – 2p.m., or 3p.m. – 5p.m., depending on the availability of open shifts.
Eligibility
Court-ordered service opportunities are open to individuals who:
- Have been court-ordered to complete 10 or more hours of community service
- Are 18 years of age or older
DWI/DUI and traffic or moving violations are accepted in our court-ordered service program. Other types of violations will be subject to review, except for the categories listed below.
Individuals who are convicted of the following are not eligible for Seattle Humane’s volunteer program:
- Animal cruelty or abuse
- Crimes against minors or other vulnerable populations
- Violent crimes
- Sex crimes
- Harassment
Timeline
Seattle Humane cannot guarantee hours within a certain timeframe. Volunteer openings are based on shelter needs and the availability of our staff trainers.
If your deadline is within 6 weeks, we recommend looking into other options, as we are unable to accommodate urgent service needs. Completion of online training materials and paperwork, plus one in-person training class are required before volunteers can begin logging service hours. Many classes and shifts fill up early, and volunteers can expect a few weeks between applying and beginning to volunteer.
How to Get Started
