Seattle Humane Pet Food Bank joins regional effort

What we’re doing to address pet food insecurity during the Covid-19 pandemic.

During this unprecedented time in history, when so many people are struggling to make ends meet, Seattle Humane has joined an amazing regional effort to ensure pet owners are able to keep their animals happy and healthy by addressing food insecurity in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through the generous support of GreaterGood.org, a national nonprofit that protects people, pets and the planet, Seattle Humane worked with a team of shelter partners to create a distribution hub to get GreaterGood.org’s ongoing donations of pet food and supplies to those struggling financially. This rescue bank is also benefiting from the support of its partners and other community supporters, such as PetSmart Charities

We are working with the Seattle Animal Shelter, Auburn Valley Humane Society, Pasado’s Safe Haven, and Regional Animal Services of King County (RASKC) to support pet owners during a time when the need is so great. King County has leased a warehouse to store pallets of pet food and supplies, which will be distributed across the state. Together with RASKC we are providing an updated interactive map (hyperlink here) to help pet owners find distribution sites around the region. Animal shelters and rescues outside King County in need of assistance are encouraged to contact our team at Seattle Humane by emailing Lifesaver@seattlehumane.org.

This regional project to keep pets healthy and well-fed is an amplification of the work Seattle Humane has performed for years through its own Pet Food Bank. Seattle Humane is committed to our 50 community partners and hundreds of individual clients served through our Pet Food Bank, and we want to increase our support as much as possible through this regional partnership. Pet owners who are unable to visit a physical location can visit this link to fill out and submit a Pet Food Bank request form.

  1. is it possible to find out if you have any corgies coming in? We have been searching for an affordable corgy for months. My niece (25) lost her mother last year and needs a companion to cheer her up. She was very close to my sister and we are trying to help her find her the dog she has been searching for. She has a fenced yard and would be going to a loving home.
    thanks, Sandy Dembinski 360-304-2009

    1. Hi Sandy, we won’t be sure until they arrive later this week. You can see adoptable pets as they become available on our adoption page.

      1. Is the Corgi mix part of the CA relocation program? Any idea what other breed is part of this Corgi? I have friends in AZ that adopted a purebred fluffy Corgi and they just adore her!

  2. Hi,

We’re looking for a small dog, roughly 15-25 lbs. We’re most interested in a younger poodle-mix.

Any idea if there are any small dogs other than chihuahua in this group?

  3. Hello, my family and I are going to to possibly adopting dog coming up from the California fires. Looking for a smaller lap dog do you know when you will be updating the adoption page with the 20 dogs coming in from Seatac today?

  4. Seattle Humane is prioritizing large breed dogs right now but it’s certainly possible. We currently have several small dogs in our care. Just check out the website at seattlehumane.org. Adopting any dog will help animals in California by opening up space for new arrivals.

  5. Our 13-year-old Westie went over the Rainbow Bridge on Nov. 1. It is the first time we have been without a Westie in 20 years. It is so quiet in our home without one! We are senior citizens, so we didn’t want to adopt a puppy. We would love to have a rescue Westie or a bonded pair!

    1. Hi there. We aren’t able to provide individual searches for specific breeds or pets but you can see all adoptable animals at seattlehumane.org.

  6. It breaks my heart the number of animals who are in great need from these horrific fires. I have been wanting to rescue a small dog, perhaps in the terrier category, and would love to be of help to give a home to a displaced dog from the California fires.

My heart is heavy for them all…..

Thank you for all you are doing.

  7. When will the cats that came in on 21st and ones coming in today be available for adoption ? My daughter and I are interested in helping out by coming down and seeing about adopting. In addition are there any specials on adoption fee’s at this time for any of the cats available ?

    1. The kittens from the 21st are available now and you can see all adoptable pets on our website at seattlehumane.org.

        1. Hi TinaM. The kittens transferred from California have been adopted! But you can always see more kittens as they become available on our website under “Adoption.” Not all kittens will have time for a photo but they should have a profile/placeholder indicating they’re available for adoption. Thank you!

  8. We are driving home from Los Angeles this evening with our three dogs to Seattle. We will drive straight through and take doggy breaks. We could potentially drive a few dogs to Seattle humane in bellevue. They would be in the truck bed but we could easily keep the kennel wrapped with blankets. Potentially a bonded pair that would prefer to share kennel space. Let me know if I could help!

    1. Thank you for this kind offer! But our Life-Saver Team is driving to CA today to receive animals who are ready for transport so we’re covered. We appreciate the offer!

  9. My husband & I recently lost our Newfie/Pyrenees to cancer. We have an Aussie /Collie that is pretty lonesome. We’d certainly consider fostering or adopting a larger dog.

    1. Hi Terry. All available pets are automatically shown on our website. Please go to the “adoption” section of seattlehumane.org to check out the sweet faces! Some of the dogs we brought back from California on Saturday will be available for adoption today (Monday).

  10. Looking for a small loving dog for a nice home to comfort after the stress of fire. I’m a work from home professional without kids or other pets so plenty of time to spoil my new furry friend.

    1. Hi Dallas. All available pets are automatically shown on our website. Please go to the “adoption” section of seattlehumane.org to check out the sweet faces! Some of the dogs we brought back from California on Saturday will be available for adoption today (Monday).

  11. When can I call to see if you have any labs – I lost my lab that I adopted a year ago that was the love of my life.

    1. Hi Lisa. All available pets are automatically shown on our website. Please go to the “adoption” section of seattlehumane.org to check out the sweet faces! Some of the dogs we brought back from California on Saturday will be available for adoption today (Monday).

    1. Hi Carol! Once Dahlia has a photoshoot with one of our photography volunteers, her photo will automatically be loaded onto her website profile.

  12. We’re still working to match owners and pets – how can you put camp fire animals up for adoption so quickly!?!
We’re spending hours posting descriptions, contact info, pet photos into a searchable database and have a huge number of volunteers contacting owners.
If you take in pets and have no public photos available, until you deem them adoptable, how are Camp Fire victims ever going to find their pets? Where are the photos of the animals you’ve taken? This makes our efforts feel like a complete waste of time!

    1. Hi there. As stated in the blog, Seattle Humane is not taking in pets lost or separated from their owners. These animals were in California shelters as homeless pets prior to the wildfires. Thank you for your work to reunite families. By making room in California shelters, we’re hoping this effort will provide space in those shelters to reunite lost pets with their families and provide temporary housing for displaced pets.

Again, Seattle Humane is NOT taking in owned animals.

  13. I keep checking the website for Australian Cattle dogs. We missed out on Lucky Charms. Keep up the great work with all these great animals.

  14. We’re looking for a dog to join our family! We have a two and a half year old and would love to talk with someone about dogs who would be a good fit into our growing family.

  15. I am just wanting clarification. The pets you are receiving are or are not from the Campfire wildfire? Are they pets from the California shelters being shipped to make room for the wildfire pets that have not been matched with their owners? I am looking to match pets to parents, but if they are taken from the area it will be a lost cause.

    Thanks.

    1. Hi Dawn. This is correct. As stated in the blog, Seattle Humane is only transferring animals who were previously in shelters before the fires. We are not taking in animals separated from their owners.

    1. Hi Tracy! We only received 16 cats and kittens on Friday and most of them were adopted over the weekend. Keep checking our adoption section for more kitties if you’re specifically looking for young kittens as they become available. Thank you!
