New Volunteer Orientation

Please note that volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. Teens ages 13-17 can explore volunteering through our Humane Teen Club and Teens for Animals. There are many ways for kids to help the animals. Contact [email protected] if you are under 18 and would like information on earning school community service hours.

Seattle Humane does not offer volunteer opportunities for court-ordered community service.

Want info on group volunteering? Group volunteer opportunities are currently on hold during construction. Please know we have limited opportunities available, and cannot allow groups to work hands-on with our pets. Groups most often volunteer with our Community Outreach department in our Pet Food Bank.

How to Get Started:

1. Complete a volunteer profile.

2. Attend our mandatory two-hour Seattle Humane Volunteer Orientation.

  • Reservations are required for orientation. You will receive a list of upcoming dates to choose from when you submit your volunteer profile.
  • Attending an orientation allows time to learn our policies, procedures and programs specific to our shelter, and gain a thorough understanding of the many ways you can truly make a difference — and ultimately help find homes for the animals in our care.
  • You will also receive a short lecture on animal behavior as part of your orientation session.

3. Agree to a six-month commitment (with the exception of foster and special events).

4. Sign up for one of our available volunteer opportunities, which include weekly, monthly and on-call options that you can do at the shelter, at home or in the community, following the volunteer orientation.

5. Attend any training classes pertaining to the program that you sign up for.

If you have submitted a profile and did not receive a list of upcoming orientations, please email [email protected] for assistance.

Well Hello There!

Frida blossomed into a social butterfly. She now loves going to the park and snuggling. She has filled my heart with happiness since adopting her almost two years ago!
