I want to explore : For Teens
Humane Teen Club
The Humane Teen Club is for teens aged 13 to 17 who are interested in learning about animal companionship and becoming volunteers at the Seattle Humane Society before they turn 18. The members are chosen at the end of the summer and the program runs throughout the school year. The Humane Teen Club meets on the first Saturday of each month from October to June and teens learn about companion animal welfare and receive training to prepare them to volunteer at the shelter. Space is limited to 20 members who are chosen based on the strength of their application essays. Applications are due by August 31, 2009.
Service Learning Opportunities
Foster a Cat & Earn Service Hours!
Help the Seattle Humane Society save even more lives by opening your home temporarily to a cat in need of some TLC. All you need is a spare room and some spare time. The commitment is from two to eight weeks. Taking a cat for even a short time helps to:
• Give long timer cats a well deserved break from the shelter environment
• Help cats recover from colds in a more supportive and stress free environment
• Open up space for the never ending stream of new cats
We will credit you 3 service hours for each day of fostering. Bring school paperwork to the shelter and your foster coordinator will sign off.
If you are interested in fostering a cat, get started by emailing our volunteer department at volunteers@seattlehumane.org. Include all of your contact information and be sure to put “ Cat Fostering” in the subject line of your email. Once the Seattle Humane Society Cat Foster
Coordinator contacts you, you can come in with a parent to receive training on how to provide the care your cat needs. The Seattle Humane Society is able to provide you with a litter box, cat litter, cat food, medications if necessary and other needed supplies.
Other Ways Teens Can Help The Animals
In order to have hands-on contact with shelter animals you need to be 18 years of age. But there of plenty of other ways to help shelter animals and earn service hours. You can do a pet food drive, coordinate a towel and blanket collection, or host a fundraiser for the shelter. Click here to see a complete list of projects you can do to help shelter animals!
To receive credit for community service hours, bring in your donations along with a few photographs of you for documentation and someone at the shelter will sign off on your community service hours. Click here to print a Seattle Humane Society community service time log.
