The Year of the Mixed Breed

The Westminster Kennel Club is hosting its 138th annual show in New York City on Feb. 10-11, featuring 187 different dog breeds. This show has been a treasure for many competitors and dog lovers since 1877, but this year there will be even more to celebrate as mixed breed dogs join the ranks in the weekend agility competition for the first time in Westminster history!

At Seattle Humane, we love dogs in every shape, size, age, breed and background. We mean it when we say we’ve got someone for everyone! According to a study conducted by the ASPCA, purebred dogs make up a quarter of dogs in animal shelters nationwide. Seattle Humane is no exception – 25-30% of our adoptable dogs are in fact, purebred.

Dogs like Sugar and Odie who are both currently available for adoption!

Odie
Odie

Odie, an adorable low-rider with a coat of blonde curls, is a Miniature Longhaired Dachshund who is available right now at Seattle Humane. He’s short and stout, but sure to weave through the poles and tunnels with the best of them. This smart and loving little cutie has all the pedigree without costing you a pretty penny, and you’ll rest assured knowing you gave an orphaned pet a wonderful home.

Sugar
Sugar

A positive stunner and avid “leaner,” Sugar has won the hearts of all the staff, volunteers and guests of the shelter. She’s a Samoyed, a breed known for their signature black-lipped grin and their inherent friendliness with people. Sugar, who’s currently available for adoption at Seattle Humane, is true to her breed and to her name, making her the best friend you’ve always wanted!

If you’re on the lookout for a one-of-a-kind pet, visiting your local shelter is your best bet! You’ll meet hundreds of adoptable dogs who will truly stand out in a crowd. Check out some of Seattle Humane’s finest (and rarest!) hybrid cuties available for adoption.

Duncan
Duncan

Meet our very own Boston Panda! He’s more of a Pandahuahua, but really, you should just call Duncan yours. He’s only 8 weeks old and *fingers crossed* he’ll never grow into those ears. Duncan’s pedigree  is ideal for both weekend getaways (he takes up minimal space in the car) and daily trots around Greenlake. He’ll grow strong and sturdy, but he’ll always be a panda-faced cutie. Perfect for urban, suburban, high-rise, low-rise, and even “I share a house with six other people” living. You did notice his ears, right?

Susie
Susie

Little Miss Susie is one adorable wire-haired gray and white Whatsit. She resembles a Miniature Schnauzer, but she’s much more interesting. Susie is outdoorsy, but she’s also the perfect size lap-warmer for chilly evenings in front of the T.V. She’s even MORE perfect for not judging you for watching Real Housewives reruns.

Anastasia
Anastasia

No, it’s not just a great haircut. Anastasia is a Pom-Yorktini – strong, sophisticated, chic. You can’t shop this kind of fashion. You must adopt! This cute, inquisitive lady is waiting for you at Seattle Humane and she’s WAY ahead of the trends!

Adorable mixed breed dogs just like these will compete for the first time in the Masters Agility Championship this Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014 between 11 a.m. and 10 p.m. (Eastern Time).  A great leap for canine-kind and their two-legged partners! As for your next canine sensation, whether you’re looking for a specific breed or a creative, smile-inducing hybrid, they’re waiting for you at your local shelter.
