I want a pet : Preparing For A Critter

Getting Ready For Your New Family Member!

In anticipation of your new critter's arrival, it's important to take some preliminary steps:

Get Together
Sit down with all of your family members to make sure that everyone is on board with the decision to adopt a small animal. Sometimes people mistakenly believe that animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs require less work that cats and dogs, however, these pets need a substantial amount of care and attention. If you all agree that you are ready for the fun and responsibility that goes along with owning a critter, discuss daily responsibilities. Some families find it helpful to make a daily care schedule in order to ensure the critter's health and happiness.

Location, Location, Location!
The location of your new critter's home is very important. You will need to select a place that is out of drafts and direct sunlight, but also away from heating vents and radiators. Having a stable surface is a must, especially for households with small children and/or dogs that could potentially knock over your critter's abode. The key is to find a spot where your furry friend can be a part of daily family life without being made vulnerable. Since guinea pig and rabbit cages can be quite sizable, it's a good idea to get them in plaace several days in advance. That way, you and your family will be able to evaluate the location and adjust to the new set-up.

Get Ready To Go
Stock up on all the essential supplies beforehand - a secure abode, sleeping materials (den or burrow, shredded paper, etc.), species specific food, water bottle, salt lick (if neccessary), and hard chewing surfaces/toys.

Have A Vet For Your Pet
Locate a good veterinarian, if you don't already have one. Need help? The Washington State Veterinary Medical Association provides listings of animal clinics by zip code and practice type, along with information about selecting a veterinarian.
